Situation in Gaza apocalyptic: UN

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights described the situation in Gaza as catastrophic and apocalyptic.

AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights described the situation in Gaza as catastrophic and apocalyptic.

On the threshold of the World Day of Human Rights, December 10, Volker Turk told reporters on Wednesday that the situation in Gaza is catastrophic.

As Anadolu News Agency reports, Turk called for an urgent cessation of hostilities and the release of all hostages and said that Palestinians in Gaza are suffering death, siege, destruction, and deprivation of the most essential human needs, such as food, water, lifesaving medical supplies, and other essentials on a massive scale.

“Palestinians in Gaza are living in utter, deepening horror,” he added.

Volker Turk stressed that no place in Gaza is safe, saying: "As we speak, some 1.9 million out of the 2.2 million Palestinians have been displaced and are being pushed into ever-diminishing and extremely overcrowded places in southern Gaza, in unsanitary and unhealthy conditions."

The UN human rights commissioner said that humanitarian aid is again “virtually cut off” in Gaza, as fears of widespread disease and hunger spread.

“In these circumstances, there is a heightened risk of atrocity crimes. Measures need to be taken urgently – both by the parties concerned and by all States – particularly those with influence – to prevent any such crimes,” he added.

Israel is struggling to compensate for the irreparable intelligence and military blow it suffered from the October 7 Operation of Al-Aqsa Flood carried out by Hamas.

From the beginning of the Israeli war on Gaza over 16,200 Palestinian people have been martyred.
