UN Security Council approves humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza

The UN Security Council on Wednesday voted in favor of a resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza to allow for the provision of humanitarian aid.

AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): The UN Security Council on Wednesday voted in favor of a resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza to allow for the provision of humanitarian aid.

The UN Security Council has adopted a resolution calling for "urgent and extended humanitarian pauses" in fighting in the Gaza Strip. This came after four unsuccessful attempts to respond to the Israeli regime's aggression against Palestinians.

The council voted on a draft resolution presented by Malta at an emergency session on Wednesday.

The draft expressed deep concerns about the worsening humanitarian situation in Gaza and its impact on children in particular.

The document demanded compliance with international law with regard to the protection of civilians, especially children. It also called for humanitarian pauses in the fighting to get relief supplies to children.

The 12-0 vote was not unanimous. The US, UK and Russia abstained on the measure, with the other dozen council members voting in favor.

The health ministry in Gaza says Israel's ensuing aerial bombardment and ground offensive have killed 11,320 people.
