UN facing historic test about Zionists' crimes: Deputy FM

Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs says that the United Nations has once again faced a historic test about Zionists' crimes.

AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs says that the United Nations has once again faced a historic test about Zionists' crimes.

Today, once again, the United Nations is faced with a historic test, and that is the crimes of the Israeli regime in Palestine, Reza Najafi said addressing a ceremony to commemorate the United Nations Day here in Tehran on Tuesday.

The Palestinian issue is not just a political or territorial dispute, but it represents the ideals and struggles of the resistant people who have nurtured justice and peace in their minds to achieve their rights, he added.

The United Nations Day is a suitable framework to remember the important role of the United Nations in supporting the efforts of countries in materializing the goals and principles of the United Nations Charter, he said.

The United Nations, as the highest manifestation of multilateralism, can and should pave the necessary ground for countries to develop friendly relations based on equal rights and joint efforts to solve international economic, social, cultural, and humanitarian issues, he noted.

The philosophy of the formation of the United Nations system was based on multilateralism and the negation of unilateralism, Najafi said.

The founding of the United Nations created the hope that the world would be governed by law and multilateralism, he added.

Since October 18, 2023, the last part of the unfair restrictions imposed for years by the UN Security Council in the field of missile activities and the exchange of related services and technologies, as well as financial restrictions against some Iranian individuals and institutions is completely terminated, he said.

Unfortunately, the United Nations, especially the Security Council, has repeatedly become a political tool of some countries, especially the United States, and has failed in the test of fulfilling its duty to maintain international peace and security, Najafi said .

A concrete example of this for the Iranian nation is the silence and inaction of the UN Security Council against the widespread use of chemical weapons by Saddam's army and the martyrdom of 10,000 Iranians and the injury of 70,000 others due to chemical bombs donated by the West, he added.

The United Nations and its related legal and political bodies are obliged to be in line with the public opinion of the international community, especially the oppressed nations that have been harmed by the policies of state terrorism as well as apartheid and racism of the Zionist regime, in carrying out their inherent duties in order to ensure that the Palestinian nation attains its absolute rights and fulfill their legitimate aspirations, including the right to return to their homeland, the right to determine their destiny, achieve freedom and independence, establish justice and realize sovereignty, he noted.

The unconditional support of the Western countries, especially the United States, to the Zionist occupation regime and the shameful disregard for the aggression and oppression of the occupation against the Palestinian people, especially women, and children, is one of the main factors of emboldening the regime and the continuation of gross violation of international law, he stated.

The Islamic Republic of Iran's principled, logical, comprehensive and efficient position regarding the resolution of the occupation of Palestine was submitted to the United Nations and its respected Secretary General in the framework of the four-point initiative entitled holding a national referendum in Palestine on November 1, 2019, Najafi stressed.

Iran's effort in the international arena has been to establish international peace and security, fight against terrorism, adhere to the principles of international law, and move in line with multilateralism, he said.

The policy of interaction and constructive relations with the world has always been on Iran's agenda and has insisted on it, he added.

The policy of good neighborliness and creating a safer and more developed region are among the main priorities of Iran's foreign policy, he noted.

We have been after maintaining good relations with our neighbors in the east, west, north, and south, Najafi reiterated.

We are hoping for the day that the UN member states will succeed in realizing the main goal of the body to establish world peace and security, he added.
