Bahrain's Jaw Prison authorities prevent prisoner of conscience from attending his father's funeral procession

The Jaw prison administration refused to temporarily release prisoner of conscience Jassim Mohammad Mansour Abdulkarim Nasser, from Sitra, to attend the burial and funeral procession of his father, who died on Monday evening, October 23, 2023.

AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): The Jaw prison administration refused to temporarily release prisoner of conscience Jassim Mohammad Mansour Abdulkarim Nasser, from Sitra, to attend the burial and funeral procession of his father, who died on Monday evening, October 23, 2023.

The head of the monitoring and follow-up committee at the "Bahrain Society for Human Rights" Zainab Al-Khamis, said in a post on the "X" platform, that "detainee Mansour was unable to take a last farewell look at his father. He was denied the right to humanitarian visit stipulated in the internal regulations of the Correction and Rehabilitation Centre for first-degree deaths."

"All of this is a clear violation of domestic law and rule 70 of the United Nations Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners, known as the Nelson Mandela Rules," Al-Khamis further stated.

"Why isn't the law applied to all prisoners equally? Is it applied based on the type of the prisoner's case or the extent of his "seriousness?" She demanded that "the rights of all prisoners be equal and that the law be applied to take into account its humanitarian dimensions."

She confirmed that the authorities deprived, during the past week, detainee of conscience Ali Riad Sanqour from benefiting from the humanitarian visit.

It is to note that Jassim Mansour Abdulkarim Nasser has been detained since 14 November 2015 and is sentenced to 45 years in prison on political grounds.
