Murtaza Bhai was born in Kigoma, Tanzania in 1944. Murtaza Bhai continued his education in Kigoma and Dar es Salaam.
Murtaza Karbala had a lovely, attractive and inspiring personality. He started his social service at a young age in Kigoma as a voluntary community service.
He played an important role in the beginning of the Ashura night ceremony. This ceremony started for the first time in Kigoma in 1969. This tradition has been continuing by Bilal Muslim Mission until now.
The late Murtaza Karbala joined the IUVC (Corps Volunteer Union Ithna-Asheri) in Dar es Salaam in 1975 and actively participated in various programs of the group, such as helping the victims of the flood in Rofiji, the special committee for organizing the Ashura night ceremony, The annual assembly of Bagamoyo, the name of a city in Tanzania, the day of Hussain (peace be upon him) and the Prophet's birth in the city of Dar es Salaam.
From 2004 to 2007, he was the head of preaching Institute of Bilal Muslim Mission in Tanzania. In 2007, he joined the AFED (federation Africa) General Assembly of preaching Bilal Institute and was appointed as its head in 2016 and held this position until his death.
He was very interested in the history of the Ithna-Asheri community. Murtaza Karbala also had a large personal collection of extensive photographs of congregations, mosques, imams, people and various occasions, which he has been collecting and preserving for years.
After his honorable and selfless services to society and humanity, especially to the Ithna-Asheri community, in the 80 second session of the Supreme Council of the Ithna-Asheri community, which was held in Dar es Salaam in December 2020, He received the Abbasi medal by the hand of Haj Shabiri Najafi, the president of the African Federation. The Abbasi Medal, named after Hazrat Abbas (peace be upon him), is one of the medals awarded by the Khoja Ithna-Asheri Shia Federation for the services and efforts of individuals who play a role in promoting the Shia.
In 2021, Hajj Murtaza Ramzan Ali Jiuraj passed away, his body was buried in the city of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
