Over 400,000 pilgrims travel to Mashhad on foot during last days of Safar

During the last days of the lunar Hijri month of Safar (ended Saturday) more than 400,000 pilgrims traveled to the holy city of Mashhad on foot to take part in mourning rituals.

AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): During the last days of the lunar Hijri month of Safar (ended Saturday) more than 400,000 pilgrims traveled to the holy city of Mashhad on foot to take part in mourning rituals.

The mourning ceremonies marked the Arbaeen (40th day after the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS), which fell on September 6), the demise anniversary of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hassan (AS), which fell on September 14, and the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Reza (AS), which fell on September 15.

Hossein Rezaei, the spokesperson for a society that serves pilgrims visiting Mashhad on foot, said more than 20,000 volunteers provided services to the pilgrims.

He said 490 Salawati (free) service stations were set up on the path of pilgrims, providing them with food, medical services, lodging, cultural services, etc.

Mashhad is home to the shrine of Imam Reza (AS), the 8th Shia Imam. It is one of the most extensively visited pilgrimage centers in the world.

Tens of millions of pilgrims from all over Iran as well as other countries visit the holy city every year.
