Iran, Iraq sign a MoU to facilitate pilgrims' movement

Iran and Iraq signed a memorandum of understanding to facilitate the movement of pilgrims during the Arbaeen procession.

AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Iran and Iraq signed a memorandum of understanding to facilitate the movement of pilgrims during the Arbaeen procession.

Every year, the world's largest annual public gathering is held in the city of Karbala in Iraq at the end of the 40-day mourning period following Ashura, the commemoration of the martyrdom of Prophet Muhammad’s grandson.

Pilgrims enter the city of Karbala in the south of Iraq to attend the Arbaeen procession.

Pilgrims from Pakistan and other neighbors of Iran, in the days leading to Arbaeen, enter Iran and then go to the holy shrines from the western and southern borders of Iran.

The memorandum of understanding was signed by Ahmad Vahidi, the Minister of Interior of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and his Iraqi counterpart Abdul Amir Al-Shammari.

Based on the memorandum, it was decided that Tehran and Baghdad would cooperate through the exchange of information and identity details of pilgrims from Afghanistan and Pakistan who enter Iran for the Arbaeen pilgrimage and facilitate their entry into Iraq.
