Arbaeen pilgrims begin march from southernmost region of Iraq

The annual Arbaeen pilgrimage, a significant spiritual religious journey for devotees of Imam Hussein (AS), has set off from the southernmost region of Iraq.

AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): The annual Arbaeen pilgrimage, a significant spiritual religious journey for devotees of Imam Hussein (AS), has set off from the southernmost region of Iraq.

Pilgrims embarked on their Arbaeen walk from the Ra’s al-Bishah area, situated in the farthest reaches of southern Iraq on Friday, according to Iraqi media outlets. This symbolic journey is being carried out under the banner of "from sea to river" echoing their determination to traverse vast distances to pay homage to Imam Hussein (AS).

Notably, members of this pilgrimage group cross water bodies for extended periods, emphasizing their unwavering dedication as they transition from the sea to land and continue their pilgrimage toward Karbala.

Walking through water for hours, these dedicated pilgrims proudly wave flags adorned with the name of Imam Hussein (AS), visually expressing their allegiance to his teachings and movement.

Arbaeen, hailed as one of the most substantial religious congregations on the planet, marks its solemn presence 40 days after Ashura, the observance commemorating the martyrdom of the third Shia Imam, Imam Hussein (AS). This year’s Arbaeen will fall on September 6 or 7, depending on the moon sighting.

Every year, a monumental throng of Shia devotees undertakes a profound pilgrimage to the city of Karbala in Iraq, where the sacred sanctuary of Imam Hussein (AS) stands. Drawing primarily from the regions of Iraq and Iran, these pilgrims embark on arduous foot journeys, traversing extensive routes to reach the sacred precincts of the holy city.

Last September, a substantial cohort of individuals representing diverse nationalities converged, forming a tapestry of participation in the Arbaeen rituals. This unified endeavor set a novel record, emphasizing the global magnitude and significance of this venerable pilgrimage.
