AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): People from all walks of life in Iran marked the mourning ceremony of “Sham-e-Ghariban” across the country, renewing allegiance to the ideals of Imam Hossain.
The mourning ceremony is observed between the sunset of Ashura and the 11th Muharram, with Shias lamenting the tragedies that befell the Ahl-ul-Bayt, the purified progeny of the Holy Prophet of Islam Mohammad (AS).
The commemoration includes special and unique rituals such as setting fire to symbolic tents - that represent the tents of the camp of Imam Hussein (AS) which were burned by the enemies on that night in 61/680-, lighting candles, and reciting elegies (Rawdha Khani) in memory of the events that took place on Ashura.
In this commemoration of mourning, children and youth are used as models for the events on the day of 'Ashura. The gathering is meant to evoke the remembrance of the homelessness of the family of Imam Hussain (AS) and the imprisonment of the children and those who survived the battle. On the evening of 'Ashura, they were left in the dark of the night, in the deserts of Karbala, without any form of protection or safety.
