OIC condemns Quran desecration in Copenhagen

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on Saturday strongly condemned the desecration of the Holy Quran in the Danish capital of Copenhagen.

AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on Saturday strongly condemned the desecration of the Holy Quran in the Danish capital of Copenhagen.

"We condemn in strongest possible terms the public desecration of the #HolyQuran in Denmark yesterday. The continued defense of and inaction against these Islamophobic acts, in the name of freedom of expression, is clearly fostering impunity," the OIC Geneva Office said on Twitter.

It called on Denmark authorities to comply with "its obligations under international law and implement UN Human Rights Council #HRC53 resolution" on countering religious hatred that was adopted last week.

"Those failing to speak out, despite clear direction by HRC to do so, are fast losing credibility," the OIC stated.

A group of anti-Muslim extremists staged a provocative act of Quran desecration in Denmark's capital Copenhagen on Friday, sparking outrage among Muslims who urged the authorities to prevent such hateful acts from repeating.

The group, which calls itself "Danske Patrioter" (Danish Patriots), burned the holy book in front of Iraq's Embassy in Copenhagen under police protection, as seen in the videos they shared on social media.

They also carried a banner with insulting slogans against Islam, before stamping on the Iraqi flag and a copy of the Quran.

The group claimed they did this to "protest" the attack against Sweden's Embassy in Baghdad, which was stormed by angry protesters on Wednesday night in response to another incident of Quran burning by an Iraqi migrant in Stockholm.
