AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): As the month of Muharram begins, the holy shrine of Imam Reza (AS) in Mashhad is draped in black and welcomes mourners of Imam Hussein.
More than 1,300 years ago, in 61 AH, Imam Hussein (AS), a grandson of Islam's Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and his 72 companions were martyred in the Battle of Karbala, in southern Iraq, after fighting courageously for justice against the much larger army of the Umayyad caliph, Yazid I.
The holy shrine of the 8th Shiite Imam is a significant site for Husseini's mourning during the Muharram, attracting Iranian and foreign pilgrims who gather at the Razavi shrine.
Each year, Afghan, Pakistani, Arab, and Iranian pilgrims come to the Holy Shrine in the first ten days of Muharram to pay their respects to Imam Hussein.
To mark the occasion, the flag on top of the dome of the holy shrine has been replaced with a black one. The black flag will remain on the dome hoisted until the end of the Safar month, which begins on August 28, 2022, in the Gregorian calendar and ends on September 26, 2022.
