Muharram is one of the most significant festivals celebrated by the Muslim community in India as it marks the beginning of the Islamic New Year.

The tenth day of Muharram is known as Ashura. Among Shia Muslims, Ashura is observed through large demonstrations of high-scale mourning as it marks the martyrdom of Hussein ibn Ali, the third Imam of Shia, who was martyred during the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE.

Every year, the third most sacred place for Shias (Shah Cheragh) in Iran is covered in black to serve as the focal point for Imam Hussein (AS) mourners.

On Monday evening, the mourning flag was raised above the dome of Shah Cheragh, while the shrine's vicinity was covered in black as part of a traditional ritual.

The mourning flag for Imam Hussein (AS) is raised over the dome of the holy shrine until the end of the month of Safar, the second month of the Islamic (Hijri) calendar.
