Swedish government issues statement on Quran desecration

Sweden’s government on Sunday issued a statement after a copy of Islam’s Holy Book was burned outside a mosque in the Swedish capital of Stockholm.

AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Sweden’s government on Sunday issued a statement after a copy of Islam’s Holy Book was burned outside a mosque in the Swedish capital of Stockholm.

“The Swedish government fully understands that the Islamophobic acts committed by individuals at demonstrations in Sweden can be offensive to Muslims,” the foreign ministry said in a statement.

“We strongly condemn these acts, which in no way reflect the views of the Swedish government,” it added.

“The burning of the Qur’an, or any other holy text, is an offensive and disrespectful act and a clear provocation. Expressions of racism, xenophobia and related intolerance have no place in Sweden or in Europe,” the Swedish foreign ministry said.

The statement came after the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) said on Sunday that collective measures are needed to prevent acts of desecration to the Quran and that international law should be used to stop religious hatred after the holy book was burned in a protest in Sweden.

On Wednesday, a man tore up and burned a copy of the Holy Quran outside Stockholm’s central mosque on Wednesday, the first day of the Muslim Eid al-Adha holidays.
