Opponents of ousting Iran from UN women panel question US push

Countries opposing the US-drafted resolution terminating Iran’s membership in the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) unanimously questioned Washington’s move. AhlulBayt News Agency: Countries opposing the US-drafted resolution terminating Iran’s membership in the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) unanimously questioned Washington’s move. But Russia’s request for an opinion of the UN's legal counsel on Iran’s removal was turned down due to US-influenced political environment.

Representatives from Russia, China, Syria, Pakistan and Belarus made speeches at the UN session held on Wednesday, showing their opposition to the US move.

Russia’s Deputy Permanent Representative Gennady Kuzmin proposed that a legal advisor is selected to find out whether the United States’ draft resolution was in line with the regulations of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), but the demand was rejected because of political pressure by the US and its allies.

The Russian representative noted that there is no mechanism to remove a member state from the CSW. Therefore, the legal aspects of the move should be reviewed prior to voting in the ECOSOC.

Kuzmin added that Russia is sure that the Iranian authorities have carried out an inclusive probe into the September death of young woman Mahsa Amini, and that every independent state is entitled to use its own tools, which do not include international laws, to ensure the rule of law.

The Chinese ambassador to the ECOSOC said that Beijing opposes the resolution on ousting Iran from the CSW, as it lacks legal basis, describing the resolution as a double standard and blatant bullying.

Syria’s envoy to the ECOSOC warned that the resolution weakens multilateralism, and is in contradiction with equal rights as well as countries’ participation in international organizations.

Meanwhile, the Belarusian ambassador to the ECOSOC noted that the resolution indicates the failure of the multilateral system, questioning the real objective behind pushing for the anti-Iran resolution.

Pakistan’s envoy to the ECOSOC underlined that putting forward issues related to human rights should be always based on impartiality, transparency and refraining from political agendas.

Mexico’s ambassador to ECOSOC said that it would be better to maintain Iran’s membership in the CSW, because the situation of women will not change as a result of the termination of the membership.
