Egyptians angry at young man’s desecration of holy Quran

A video of Quran desecration by a young man shared on the video-sharing social network TikTok has drawn Muslims’ anger.

AhlulBayt News Agency: A video of Quran desecration by a young man shared on the video-sharing social network TikTok has drawn Muslims’ anger.

In the video, the man, who is a foreigner, is seen dancing to the recitation of a verse from the Quran mixed with a Western song, Cairo24 website reported.

The verse used in this video is verse 109 of Surah Al-Baqarah: “Many of the People of the Book wish they might turn you back as unbelievers after you have believed, in envy of their souls, after the truth has been clarified to them. So pardon and forgive until Allah brings His command. Allah is Powerful over everything.”

After the video was shared on TikTok, hundreds of users imitated the man, filming their singing and dancing with the verse and sharing it online.

This has angered Muslims, especially in Egypt, but Mahmoud Muhanna, a member of Al-Azhar Board of Scholars, called on followers of Islam not to retaliate.

Referring to Verse 9 of Surah Al-Hijr, “We Ourselves have revealed the Quran and We are its Protectors,” he said God protects the Holy Book and there is no need for retaliation.

He added that the Holy Prophet (PBUH) has urged Muslims to respect the holy books of other faiths and avoid disrespecting other religions.

We, therefore, respect other faith even if they disrespect us, the Al-Azhar scholar said.

Muhanna also noted that Islam has many enemies but they can never harm the religion.

He underlined the need for Muslims to remain committed to the teachings of the religion and the Holy Prophet (PBUH) and avoid responding to insult with insult.
