AhlulBayt News Agency: The United Nations’ secretary general censured a terrorist attack targeting pilgrims at the holy shrine of Shah Cheragh in Iran’s southern city of Shiraz that killed at least 15 people Wednesday.

Stéphane Dujarric, spokesman for UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, in a statement on Wednesday said, “The Secretary General strongly condemns the terrorist attack today on the Shah Cheragh Holy Shrine in Shiraz, Islamic Republic of Iran, for which the so called Islamic State (Daesh) claimed responsibility.

“Such acts targeting religious sites are especially heinous. The Secretary General stresses the need to bring to justice the perpetrators of this crime against civilians exercising their right to practice their religion.

“The Secretary General conveys his deep condolences to the bereaved families and the people and the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran. He wishes a speedy recovery to the injured.”

The shooting attack took place in Shiraz, Fars province, at around 5:45 p.m. local time (1415 GMT) on Wednesday just before the evening prayers.

The police commander of Fars province said the attacker opened indiscriminate fire at pilgrims inside the shrine and was himself wounded and arrested by security officials.

The militant who carried out the attack was reportedly a foreign national.

CCTV footage released by local authorities showed the terrorist making his way inside the shrine and opening fire at people present there.

At least 15 people have been martyred and 27 others injured in the terrorist attack.
