Members of the Shiite sect in Kaduna, however, also staged a peaceful demonstration in the state capital to protest the ongoing Israeli military operations in the Gaza Strip. The two incidents quickly heightened tension in the state, forcing the state government to enhance security by deploying military and police personnel attached to its anti-crime outfit, Operation Yaki, across the state, particularly in Zaria and Kaduna.
Our correspondent gathered that following the burning of the house of the Shiite deputy leader, over the alleged attack by its members on the Emir of Zaria last Tuesday, some members of the group converged on the razed house to mourn the incident. The mammoth crowd created by the gathering, however, made the residents of the area to panic, as they feared that the Shiites could be planning a retaliatory offensive.
The tension created in the area, our correspondent learnt, soon culminated into an alleged attack on the Shiite by members of the Izalla sect. During the alleged attack, an unidentified person was killed while another was seriously injured and taken to an undisclosed hospital for treatment.
At press-time, more soldiers and anti-riot policemen were still being drafted from Kaduna to Zaria. The state government, however, said that there was no cause for alarm, as security agencies were in control of the situation.
It said the perpetrators of the crisis in Zaria had been apprehended. It urged residents of both cities to go about their normal duties. The Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Public Affairs, Alhaji Umar Sani, said in a statement that residents of the state capital had no cause to panic and should go about their normal duties.
