Senior PKK member arressted by Turkish intelligence in northern Iraq

Türkiye's intelligence agency on Monday caught a senior member of Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) in Sinjar region of northern Iraq, state-run TRT broadcaster reported.

AhlulBayt News Agency:  Türkiye's intelligence agency on Monday caught a senior member of Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) in Sinjar region of northern Iraq, state-run TRT broadcaster reported.

The Turkish National Intelligence Organization (MIT) arrested Cekdar Kaya, who was in charge of the PKK's logistics in Sinjar region, according to TRT.

Kaya joined the PKK in 2015 and took part in attacks in Iraq's Gara region in 2016 and Sinjar in 2017. He also served as a sniper in the PKK, it reported.

The MIT has recently intensified its cross-border operations in northern Iraq. On Sunday, it killed Okkes Deveri, a PKK member in charge of its health committee and his bodyguard Kayhan Kartal in a cross-border operation in Gara.

The Turkish forces frequently carry out ground operations, airstrikes, and artillery bombardments against the group's positions in northern Iraq, especially the Qandil Mountains, the main base of the PKK.

Türkiye regularly carries out operations against PKK members based in the Kurdish region of northern Iraq.

The PKK launched an armed rebellion against the Turkish state in 1984, first seeking independence and more recently, autonomy.

More than 40,000 people have been killed in the conflict.

Türkiye launched Operation Claw-Lock in April to target the PKK’s hideouts in northern Iraq. The PKK is regarded as a “terrorist” group by Türkiye and some countries across the globe.

Ankara’s military operations in northern Iraq have been criticised by the Iraqi government, which has accused Turkey of failing to respect Iraq’s territorial integrity.
