The Tasnim Exegesis of the Holy Quran is the most detailed interpretation of the Holy Book in the history of Islam. It is the outcome of 40 years of Tafsir (Quran interpretation) sessions of Ayatollah Abdollah Javadi Amoli.
Its name comes from the verses 27 and 28 of Surah Al-Mutaffifin: “And the admixture of it is a water of Tasnim. A fountain from which drink they who are drawn near (to Allah).”
In addition to the three main sources of Tafsir, namely the Quran, Sunnah and Aql (intellect), the Arabic literature and the words of philosophers and mystics have been used in writing this interpretation.
The sessions began in 1980 and finished in April 2020. So far, 63 volumes of the Quran exegesis have been published and the total number of volumes is expected to reach 85.
The Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) selected the work in 2006 as the “Top Research Work in the Field of Islamic and Quranic Studies”.
In the last session of the Tafsir, Ayatollah Javadi Amoli talked about how the Quran exegesis came into being:
“In the year 1400 Hijri (1980), after one of my lessons in Saadat School in Qom had finished, I was sitting (at the school) alone. I did not know what lesson to start on the following day. It occurred to me that I should start a Tafsir lesson. It was on the minds of many that Tafsir lessons should become common, but on that day I had no previous experience in it not did anyone suggested that I should start it. I was prompted by God, and I began the work.
Before long, the crowd that attended the session became so large that it was beyond the school’s capacity. That is why in several phases, the sessions were moved to bigger and bigger places. At some point, we had two move to Qom’s Azam Mosque. This interpretation last for forty years until the month of Shaaban of 1441 Hijri (2020).”
Tasnim is among Quran exegeses in Persian that interpret the verses in order. The basic method, like that of Al-Mizan, is Quran by Quran interpretation. It also uses the Quran by Sunnah and Quran by Aql methods. The most effective method, though, is the Quran by Quran.
The author believes that the Quran by Quran method is the method used by the Holy Prophet (PBUH) and Ahl-ul-Bayt (AS) because the Quran is free of any mistake and error and following it is necessary and leads us to salivation.
The way the interpretation is presented is like this: The author reads a verse or some verses and then offers their interpretation in four parts: 1- A brief interpretation, 2- Interpretation, 3- Points and notes, 4- Narrative discussion.
Born in 1933, Ayatollah Abdollah Javadi Amoli is a philosopher, Faqih, Quran interpreter, Qom seminary instructor and Shia Marja (source of emulation).
He studied under great scholars like Ayatollah Boroujedi, Imam Khomeini and Allameh Tabatabaei. He has taught and written books in such fields as philosophy, Fiqh and mysticism for sixty years.
