The senior cleric, who had been hospitalized in Qom, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 82.
He was born in Najaf in 1939 and came to Iran with his father at the age of seven.
He studied Islamic sciences in the holy city of Qom with scholars like Ayatollah Mostafa Etemadi, Ayatollah Mohammad Mojahed Tabrizi and Ayatollah Seyed Mohammad Baqer Soltani Tabatabaei and then prominent Faqihs like Grand Ayatollah Boroujerdi, Imam Khomeini, Ayatollah Seyed Mohammad Mohaqeq Damad and Ayatollah Morteza Haeri Yazdi.
Ayatollah Alavi Gorgani soon became a scholar himself, teaching Islamic sciences at the Qom Seminary.
He also wrote many books in Fiqh and other Islamic fields.
Ayatollah Alavi Gorgani supported the Islamic Revolution, taking part in rallies against the Pahlavi regime.
He also supported the Islamic Republic that was established after the victory of the revolution.
