AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): An arrest warrant has been issued for a man charged in a hate-motivated incident at a northeast Edmonton mosque (Edmonton the capital city of the Canadian province of Alberta).
On Jan. 1, police arrested a man who reportedly smashed a car windshield while a Somali woman waited with her four school-aged daughters outside Al Ameen mosque, where they attended Qur’an class.
According to the National Council of Canadian Muslims, the man punched and spat on the vehicle while shouting anti-Muslim slurs, then left the parking lot and returned with a shovel.
Police later arrested the man, who was released that evening on a $1,000 promise to pay.
The 34-year-old was ordered to appear in Edmonton provincial court on Jan. 31.
Court records show an arrest warrant was issued following that court date.
Police confirmed Monday that Jeffrey Ryan Hill is wanted on two counts of uttering threats, one count of mischief under $5,000 and three counts of failure to appear.
The count of mischief deals with the damage to the woman’s car, while the uttering threats charges name two male complainants. One of the threats was allegedly made the same day as the mosque incident, the other on Nov. 28, 2020.
Court records show Hill lives near the mosque.
In a statement released three weeks after the incident, Edmonton police said investigators with the Hate Crimes and Violent Extremism Unit reviewed the case and found “evidence the offence was motivated by hatred.”
Since December 2020, Edmonton has seen a string of alleged hate attacks on Muslim women — many of whom are Black.
