Iraq expected to allow resumption of land trips for Iranian pilgrims

The head of Iran’s Hajj and Pilgrimage Organization said Iraqi officials have promised to set the grounds for the resumption of land travels by Iranian pilgrims to the Arab country.

AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): The head of Iran’s Hajj and Pilgrimage Organization said Iraqi officials have promised to set the grounds for the resumption of land travels by Iranian pilgrims to the Arab country.

During a trip to the northeastern province of Khorasan Razavi, Ali Reza Rashidian said that Iraqi authorities have promised to facilitate Iranians’ trip to the Arab country via land borders by the lunar Hijri month of Rajab, which will begin in early February.

He noted that they have given an oral promise on the issue but not a written one, adding that Iran is following up on the issue.

Rashidian also said that the Hajj and Pilgrimage Organization’s approach in a new plan on pilgrimage trips to the holy sites in Iraq is developing services to pilgrims and removing limitations so that all of those wishing to go on the spiritual trip can do so.

Every year, millions of Iranians travel to Iraq to visit the holy Shia sites in Karbala, Najaf and other cities of the Arab country.

However, there have been some restrictions on foreign pilgrims’ trips to Iraq since early 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Rashidian said the organization is fully prepared to start sending Hajj and Umrah pilgrims to Saudi Arabia if an agreement is reached on the issue with the Saudi side.
