AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Iraq’s top Shia cleric Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani answered an Istifta (new inquiry) about participation of MuslimsIn an Istifta, the senior cleric was asked whether it was ok for Muslims to attend the festivals of other religion, Al-Sumaria TV reported.

Ayatollah Sistani answered that he sees no problem as long as it is free from immorality and other types of corruption, and would not lead to dissemination of misguidance.

Earlier, answering an Istifta about Muslims’ participation in Christmas celebrations, the cleric said it is ok unless it involves corruption or dissemination of misguidance.

In another Istifta, he was asked, “What is the ruling on saying assalaamu [alaikum] (Islamic salutation, meaning peace be with you) to the People of the Book or unbelievers? Also, is it permissible to send them seasonal greetings, such as on Christmas?

Ayatollah Sistani answered, “There is no harm in initiating the salutation, albeit makrooh (undesirable act) except out of necessity, under whose remit comes urf. Responding to their salutation should be by uttering [the word] alaik (with you). There is no harm in greeting them on their occasions.”
