Birmingham police hunt suspects after gun fired at car near Shiite mosque

The shocking shooting happened outside the Shiite Islamic Center of Maarif-e-Islam, also known as the Hussainia Mosque, on Herbert Road, in Small Heath, of Birmingham (UK) at 7.15pm last night.

AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Birmingham Police are hunting the gunmen who fired at a car outside a Shia mosque.

The shocking shooting happened outside the Shiite Masjid of Maarif-e-Islam, also known as the Hussainia Mosque, on Herbert Road, in Small Heath, of Birmingham (UK) at 7.15pm last night.

West Midlands Police said occupants of another car and a van were involved in the shooting.

A white-coloured Audi A3, parked at the scene, appeared to have a bullet hole in a passenger door.

The incident is not believed to have been connected to the mosque in any way.

"We're investigating after a gun was fired at a car on Herbert Road, Small Heath last night (12 December)," a police statement said.

"It happened at around 7.15pm. Two people were in the car at the time but thankfully no one was injured.

"It's understood that occupants of another car and a van were involved in the shooting. We’re doing everything we can to find the vehicles and the people responsible.

"We cordoned off the scene for a forensic examination and enquiries are underway."

A worker from the Small Heath Health Centre, based opposite the Mosque said: “I work in the health centre opposite and I got in at 9am.

“I’ve seen this right outside. Someone has said there’s been a shooting.

“It’s mad with the young lad stabbed to death in the same area (last week).”

It follows the stab killing of tragic 18-year-old Yahya Sharif, in Coventry Road, Small Heath, on Friday.

Detective Inspector Michelle Cordell from force CID added: “I understand that incidents like this are very scary and cause lots of concern for local people, especially when no arrests have been made. I want to reassure people that we’ve got multiple officers working on this investigation right now.

“Our priority is to establish exactly what happened, find the people involved and remove any dangerous weapons from circulation. If you can assist us with our investigation, please get in touch as soon as possible.
