Expert: Nigerian government wants to keep Zakzaky in prison until he dies

Nigerian authorities are trying to prolong the imprisonment of Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, the leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), by summoning false witnesses and making new charges, according a Nigerian academic and analyst.

AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Nigerian authorities are trying to prolong the imprisonment of Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, the leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), by summoning false witnesses and making new charges, according a Nigerian academic and analyst.

The next court hearing of Sheikh Zakzaky is scheduled to take place March 8 and 9.

But Nigerian authorities do not want Sheikh Zakzaky to be released from prison soon, said Usman Megendy, the head of Usuman ɓin Foduye university’s agriculture department.

In fact, they are trying to prolong his court trials in various ways, including summoning false witnesses and making new charges, Megendy told Iran’s Fars New Agency.

Observers say Nigeria’s government sees Sheikh Zakzay as a threat and seeks to gradually kill him in prison by preventing him from receiving medical care and treatment for his past injuries.

Sheikh Zakzaky and his wife were tried and imprisoned for their alleged involvement in violence that resulted in the death of a member of the security forces during the 2015 massacre.

The couple remain in custody in Kaduna state prison in parlous health despite an earlier court ruling ordering their release.
