AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): The restoration of the Juma Mosque of the VIII century in the oldest Dagestan city Derbent is planned to be completed in 2022. The mosque is the oldest one in Russia.
At the moment, the project is being finalized taking into account a number of features that were discovered by the restorers at the initial stage of work, told TASS agency the director of the Derbent Museum-Reserve, Viktor Chesnokov.
The restoration of the mosque began in 2019. According to the agency the amount of funding for the work is more than 300 million rubles.
“We expect that the work will be completed in 2022. The restoration processes are underway. The work will be performed by a professional company from Tatarstan; everything is done very carefully”, said Chesnokov.
In his turn the head of the restoration company, Yuri Yegorushkin, noted that during the work, a number of features of the building were identified that required revision of the design documentation.
“In particular, when we were reinforcing the arch vault, we discovered an unusual "Syrian" masonry, which is not typical for Dagestan and the North Caucasus. When disassembling it, we found out that the internal filling of this space required a brick of a different size and properties, so we had to bring it from one of the factories in Tula, and, of course, that took time”, Yegorushkin noted.
