AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): A ceremony was held in commemoration of the top Shi'a Cleric and Leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky in Qom.
The special aide to the speaker of the Iranian Parliament on international affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, Shi'a cleric Ayatollah Kaabi, general secretary of The World Forum for Proximity of Islamic Schools of Thought Hamid Shahriari, and Sheikh Zakzaky’s daughter, the Head of the London-based Islamic Human Rights Commission (IHRC), Massoud Shajareh, were among the participants, delivered their speech during the ceremony.
Speakers described Zakzaki's illegal detention as inhumane and called for his release.
Ibrahim Yaqoub El Zakzaky was born on 5 May 1953. He is the head of Nigeria's Islamic Movement, which he founded in the late 1970s.
On Friday, 25 July 2014, the Nigerian Army fatally shot followers of Ibrahim Zakzaky after a pro-Palestinian procession in Zaria.
Sheikh Zakzaky, who is in his mid-sixties, lost his left eyesight when Nigerian government forces raided the northern town of Zaria. His wife also sustained serious wounds while more than 300 of his followers and three of his sons were killed in the violence.
The cleric has been kept in custody along with his wife and a large number of his followers ever since.
Back in 2016, Nigeria’s federal high court ordered his unconditional release from jail following a trial, but the government has so far refused to set him free.
Earlier December 2019, Nigerian authorities transferred Zakzaky and his wife to a dilapidated prison, where many detainees have so far died due to lack of medical attention.
A high court ordered the Department of State Services to transfer the two to the Correctional Center in Kaduna state, northwest of the country.
Members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) say any attempt to take the couple anywhere other than a hospital will put them in further jeopardy.
Sheikh Zakzaky is still in illegal detention with his health deteriorating, carrying bullets in his body as well as his wife, denying them access to their medical doctors despite the court verdict that ordered their total freedom with compensation.
