AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): The Austrian Constitutional Court has repealed the law banning the hijab in the country.
On Friday, December 11, 2020 evening, the Austrian Constitutional Court (VfGH) ruled that the law “Ban on headscarves in primary schools”, which was previously approved and implemented since the fall of 2019, was unconstitutional and therefore they repealed it.
According to the ABNA correspondent in Vienna, the judges of the court declared that the law contradicts the religious and ideological neutrality of the government and violates the equality of citizens.
By the order of the VfGH, the Austrian Chancellor must immediately announce the new rule and announce the repeal of the former one.
The controversial law banning the hijab in primary schools was passed by the last PVP-FPÖ government, and anti-Islamist elements sought to extend it from primary schools to high schools and then to universities and offices.
In response, the Austrian Muslims, led by the Shiite community, took some legal actions, and filed a lawsuit in the Constitutional Court.
Fortunately, the complaints paid off, and the court issued its final verdict on Friday evening. Hence, Muslim students no longer have to take off their hijab to go to school.
ABNA congratulates Muslims and Austrian civil rights activists - in particular, Hojat al-Islam Montazeri Moghaddam, Imam, and head of Imam Ali (a.s.) Islamic Center in Vienna, as the center of the convergence of the Austrian Shiite community - on this great achievement.
