AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): The South African government has condemned the assassination of Iranian physicist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh on Friday.
South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Dr Naledi Pandor, expressed her condemnation of the assassination and noted that it was the second prominent Iranian citizen who was killed in this manner in 2020.
She said the targeted killing of Iranians will not lead to peace, but will further exacerbate instability and tensions in the region.
Extra judicial killings of this nature have a destabilizing effect and the perpetrators of such actions must be brought to justice, said Pandor.
“We commend the restraint of the Iranian Government, despite the continued unfair targeting and outside interference in the affairs of the country,” she added.
She appealed for all states to work towards lasting peace and security within the Middle East region through dialogue, rather than confrontation, and said that South Africa stands ready to assist in this regard.
Fakhrizadeh, the head of Iranian Defense Ministry's Organization of Defensive Innovation and Research (SPND), was assassinated by terrorists in his vehicle in a small city east of the capital Tehran in an attack that also involved a car bombing.
Iran’s Ambassador to the United Nations Majid Takht-Ravanchi says there are “serious indications of Israeli responsibility” in the assassination of the Iranian scientist.
The Commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), Major General Hossein Salami, vowed a “harsh revenge and punishment” for those behind the act of terror.
