Iran permanent mission to UN hails termination of baseless, unfair, unlawful arms embargo

The Islamic Republic of Iran’s permanent mission to the United Nations hails the termination of a “baseless, unfair, and unlawful” arms embargo on the country.

AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA):  The Islamic Republic of Iran’s permanent mission to the United Nations hails the termination of a “baseless, unfair, and unlawful” arms embargo on the country.

In line with the 2015 nuclear deal, which is officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the UN Security Council (UNSC)’s embargo against trade in weapons with the Islamic Republic came to an end on Sunday. The nuclear accord had been endorsed by the Security Council through Resolution 2231.

In a press release issued on the termination of the unjust embargo, the diplomatic mission stated, “States are no longer required to seek in advance case-by-case approval by the Security Council to engage in the supply, sale or transfer of arms or related materials to and from Iran.”

“It should be emphasized that the Islamic Republic of Iran has always maintained that all sanctions and restrictive measures introduced and applied against the people of Iran have been baseless, unjust, and unlawful,” the official statement added.

The development came despite months-long attempts by the Trump Administration to extend the arms embargo.

In June, the United States circulated a draft resolution among the Security Council’s 15-strong membership, encouraging prevention of the embargo’s termination. Only the Dominican Republic is reported to have voted in favor of the draft which was voted against by both China and Russia and abstained by the rest of the UNSC’s members.

This campaign by the United States was in contravention of the JCPOA and Resolution 2231 since Washington had unilaterally withdrew from the nuclear accord back in 2018, thus giving up all of its rights as a signatory.

Iran’s permanent UN mission argued Washington’s drive had hit a dead end since the Security Council rejected its “illegal” move.

“As a responsible member of the international community, the Islamic Republic of Iran engages in legitimate trade—in accordance with international law and on the basis of its national interests—with other countries, including in the realm of arms trade,” the press release added.

The American government also fell far short of a consensus in a yet another push to restore all UN sanctions against Iran. Tehran has referred to the dual failures as historically significant defeats for Washington.
