Ban on Umrah to remain in place: Saudi ministry

Saudi Arabia’s interior ministry said it will lift a nationwide curfew but the ban on Umrah (minor Hajj) will remain in place.

AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Saudi Arabia’s interior ministry said it will lift a nationwide curfew but the ban on Umrah (minor Hajj) will remain in place.

According to Sky News Arabia, the ministry said the suspension of Umrah that was introduced in March due to the coronavirus outbreak will continue.

The Umrah situation will be regularly reviewed as per the health information regarding the pandemic, it added.

Umrah is an Islamic pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca, Saudi Arabia, performed by Muslims that can be undertaken at any time of the year, in contrast to Ḥajj which has specific dates according to the Islamic lunar calendar.

The ban on international flights and entry into the kingdom across land borders besides restriction on social gatherings with more than 50 people also remains in place.

The nationwide curfew will be lifted and all economic and commercial activities will start in Saudi Arabia on June 21 on the condition that the health protocols are fully observed.

Saudi Arabia has reported more than 154,000 coronavirus cases and 1,230 deaths from the disease.
