AhlulBayt News Agency - A ceasefire in the northern Syrian city of Aleppo will be extended by 48 hours beginning at 1 a.m. on Tuesday (2200 GMT Monday), state news agency SANA said on Monday, quoting the Syrian military high command.

Aleppo, Syria's largest pre-war city, has witnessed a vicious flare-up in fighting in recent weeks, shattering a nationwide cessation of hostilities agreement and causing peace talks to collapse.

The cessation of hostilities and such local truces do not include Islamic State or al Qaeda's Syrian branch, the Nusra Front.

Five days ago, a similar ceasefire was announced for East Ghouta (Damascus) and Latakia; however, this truce was seemingly ignored by both sides.

In the past two weeks, an estimated 300 mostly civilians have been killed in the provincial capital of Aleppo.

Furthermore, two major hospitals (Al-Quds Hospital in rebel-held Aleppo and Al-Dabit hospital in government-held Aleppo) have been destroyed due to heavy clashes in the city.

The temporal Aleppo ceasefire will be implemented not only for the densely populated city of Aleppo but also the surrounding countryside.

This comes amid heavy clashes and persistent airstrikes, especially at town of Khan Touman which was captured by jihadist rebels 4 days ago.

Syrian state TV did not mention if local Islamist rebel commanders had agreed to the ceasefire and in turn would respect it.
