At least 12 militant fighters from the ISIS were killed and over twenty injured on Wednesday after clashes broke out between the radical group and the Kurdish Peshmerga forces north of Mosul city in Iraq’s northwestern Nineveh province, military sources said.

“The Peshmerga forces launched a new attack on ISIS strongholds north of Mosul, using heavy artillery and mortar fire, in a bid to cleanse the area from the militants and open a road towards the city,” Peshmerga member Reshid Soufy said.

“Clashes broke out in the area, where ISIS militants responded by firing mortar shells on our [Peshmerga] positions,” he said.

“At least 12 militants were killed and 26 others were injured in the clashes,” Soufy said, adding that three Peshmerga soldiers were wounded in Wednesday’s operations.

The Peshmerga official reported that the western coalition has backed the Peshmerga by bombing ISIS headquarters inside the city of Mosul.

Mosul is the de facto capital of ISIS in northern Iraq. The Kurdish Peshmerga army and allied Iraqi forces, have been striving to retake the city from ISIS through intensifying attacks on the group’s tactical units and vital positions in Mosul and its suburbs.
