Iraqi official: Mosul liberation operation not yet launched

The current operation in northern Iraq merely aims to make necessary preparations for liberating Mosul and the liberation operation has not begun yet.

AhlulBayt News Agency - The current operation in northern Iraq merely aims to make necessary preparations for liberating Mosul and the liberation operation has not begun yet, said Abu Ali al-Basari, a senior official with the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Units, the Hashd al-Shaabi.

Speaking exclusively with Iran News Agency, al-Basari said that the main operation to liberate Mosul will begin in the future.

Another goal of the limited operation underway in northern Iraq, which has made some 4-5 kilometers progress so far, is to cross Dijle River and deploy Iraqi forces to the west bank of the river, al-Basari said.

He said that the existence of different cities on the way made it difficult to move towards Mosul from the north and therefore they decided to carry out the operation from the south.

He noted that the Hashd al-Shaabi units will participate in Mosul liberation operation along with Iraqi Army and tribal forces.
