Beijing - Members of Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) hope that Iran becomes a full member of the organization soon, an informed source said.
The full membership status in the organization means reciprocal aid programs as well as joint defense in case of invasion by a foreign country.
According to the Russian official News Agency "Ria-Novosti" the SCO is considering Iran's full membership.
Iran currently enjoys status of observer in the organization.
An informed source of the organization in Beijing told the Russian news agency that discussion on Iran's request is proceeding on regular procedures and it is expected that the final decision on the issue will be taken in summit meeting in Russia in June.
The report added the SCO is counter body for NATO in Central Asia.
It continued that Iran had requested for full membership in early 2008, but because of international crisis on Iran's nuclear program, the members did not follow the request very seriously.
The report quoted Iran's Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki saying he hoped that during Russian rotating presidency of the organization Iran can be accepted as a full member of it.
