Iraqi forces kill ISIS senior leader in Mosul city

(AhlulBayt News Agency) - Iraqi forces eliminated a senior ISIS militants in the city of Mosul, the Iraqi Federal Police said.



A source from the Iraqi Federal Police who spoke to Sputnik said the senior leader known as Abu Muhajir al-Rusi, who possibly of a Russian origin, was killed in an artillery strike on a command post located in the Old City in the western parts of Mosul.

Abdurrahman al-Abdin, advisor to the head of the Iraqi Federal Police further said that the artillery strike was guided by aerial drones that managed to kill the ISIS leader, including field commander nicknamed Abu Muhajir al-Rusi, as well as six of his aides.

The city of Mosul was captured by ISIS back in 2014. In October 2016 the Iraqi government backed by the US-led coalition launched an operation for liberating the city. In the beginning of this year, the forces managed to liberate the entire eastern part of Mosul. In the middle of February the Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi launched the next phase of he operation aiming to recapture the remaining parts of the city in the west.
