(AhlulBayt News Agency) - Saudi Arabia has become a puppet of the US in the region, a senior military adviser to Leader of the Islamic Revolution said, noting that Riyadh’s wrong policy of purchasing American weapons will only result in an arms race in the Middle East and escalation of regional tensions.
“Saudi Arabia and some of the region’s Arab countries have become a puppet of the United States of America, and pre-planned tensions in the region will only have the US exploit resources of Arab-Islamic countries” and intensify an arms race among Arab states, Major General Seyed Yahya Rahim Safavi said on Sunday.
He added that Saudi Arabia lacks a proper and strategic policy to utilize the arms it has purchased from the US.
The general then referred to a recent arms deal between the US and Qatar as a testimony to the US president’s business-oriented manner, saying Washington simply ignores the interests of its allies when it comes to financial profit.
The US is milking the Arab countries by selling second-hand weapons to them, he stated.
On June 14, the US signed a $12 billion deal to supply dozens of F-15 jets to Qatar, despite recent high-profile claims by US President Donald Trump alleging Qatar’s “high-level funding” of terrorism.
The signing of the deal was the latest twist in the highly contradictory US diplomacy over tensions between Qatar and the Persian Gulf Arab countries.
Qatar is facing a severe economic and diplomatic boycott by Saudi Arabia and its regional allies, who accuse the emirate of funding terrorist groups, a charge Doha denies.
The recent US arms deal with Qatar follows another huge agreement Washington has signed with Saudi Arabia.
In May, Trump sealed a $110 billion arms deal with Saudi Arabia on his maiden foreign trip as the US president. The deal, plus other investments that could total up to $350 billion, was the central achievement of Trump's visit to the kingdom.
