He said,” A misconception of Wahhabism is to accuse us of apostasy due to our tradition of pilgrimage and visiting the holy shrines of Ahlul Bayt (AS)” and added,” Our reply is to ask: From this viewpoint could not Tawaf (circumventing Kaaba during Hajj pilgrimage) be called an act of apostasy?”
“Circumvention does not translate to worshiping Kaaba same way that our objective in pilgrimage is not meant to worship Ahlul Bayt (AS)” the cleric said.
Ayatollah Makarem Shirazi stressed that pilgrimage of Ahlul Bayt (AS) is due to vital and political philosophy and called for expanding the culture of pilgrimage.
It is a tradition mainly among Shia community to visit and pay respect to the holy shrines and tombs of Ahlul Bayt (AS) household of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) and companions.
