(AhlulBayt News Agency) - The crisis in Syria has no military solution and the only way to resolve the conflict is through political dialogue, said Federica Mogherini, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, on Sunday (April 9).
Mogherini made the statement at a joint press conference after talks with Algerian Foreign Minister Ramtane Lamamra in the Algerian capital of Algiers.
She said the European Union (EU) strongly condemned the suspected chemical gas attack in Syria on April 4 and would not accept the use of chemical weapons by any country. The EU hopes to investigate the incident as soon as possible to find out the truth.
The EU foreign policy chief added that military strikes are not the solution to resolving the Syria crisis, and it can only be solved via political settlement.
"As for Syria, it was reaffirmed during the Brussels conference organized last week that there is no military solution to the crisis in Syria. For this issue, the European Union is very clear and very firm, there is no possibility for a military solution to the crisis," said Mogherini.
The United States is a friend of the EU, said Mogherini, adding that the bloc hopes the U.S. can agree with the EU on a political solution to the Syrian crisis.
Lamamra said the suspected chemical weapon attack in Syria violated the United Nations' international convention on chemical weapons and Algeria strongly condemned it. He added that Algeria has maintained a good relationship with Syria and the Syrian people, and Algeria respects the unity, independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria.
