(AhlulBayt News Agency) - Bahrain’s highest religious authority Sheikh Isa Qassim departed Manama on Monday morning, heading for treatment to the United Kingdom.
A team of medical professionals tasked with overseeing his health said in a statement that an ambulance took the ailing cleric from hospital to the Bahrain International Airport before he was flown to London.
The team noted that the departure comes following a consensus “to quickly take the necessary measures” to prevent a further deterioration of Sheikh Qassim’s health.
The 80-year-old was hospitalized late last month for severe pelvic and back pains.
His health deteriorated dramatically ever since Manama’s security forces stormed his home in Bahrain’s Diraz last May and placed him under house arrest.
Sheikh Qassim was arbitrarily stripped of his nationality in June 2016 and confined to Diraz for speaking out against Manama’s policies.
