HRW calls for immediate release of Nabeel Rajab

Human Rights Watch (HRW) called for the “immediate release” of prominent Bahraini human rights defender Nabeel Rajab, urging Manama to drop all charges against him.

(AhlulBayt News Agency) - Human Rights Watch (HRW) called for the “immediate release” of prominent Bahraini human rights defender Nabeel Rajab, urging Manama to drop all charges against him.

Rajab is currently appealing a 5-year prison sentence, which he received in February for posting critical tweets of the Saudi-led war in Yemen and Manama’s mistreatment of prisoners.

The final ruling in the case is expected on June 5.

“Nothing that Nabeel Rajab posted on human rights in Bahrain or the humanitarian crisis in Yemen justifies his spending a single minute behind bars,” HRW’s Middle East director Sarah Leah Whitson said. “These charges inherently violate Rajab’s basic human rights and should have never been brought in the first place.”

Citing Rajab’s relatives, the rights group reported that the Bahraini activist is being denied surgery for a skin condition and is held in a “cramped, dirty, and insect-infested cell”.

Rajab is also serving a separate 2-year sentence over television interviews and faces additional charges over op-eds published in western newspapers.
