Bahrain’s Ulama underscore popular demand for judicial impartiality

In a statement released on Tuesday, the Ulama alleged that “death sentences are handed down to opponents of the regime’s policies.”

(AhlulBayt News Agency) - Bahrain’s religious scholars or the Ulama reiterated the people’s call for judicial impartiality in the kingdom, describing the actions of the judiciary as un-Islamic.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the Ulama alleged that “death sentences are handed down to opponents of the regime’s policies.”

22 Bahrainis are currently on death row, and at least 6 have exhausted the appeal process.
In the last two days alone, Manama’s top court upheld three death sentences in highly controversial cases said to involve the use of torture and coerced confessions.

The Ulama also described the recent death sentences handed down to six civilians by Manama’s top military court as a “blatant manipulation of the jurisdiction of military courts”.
