Trump seriously considering moving US embassy to Jerusalem al-Quds: Pence

(AhlulBayt News Agency) - Vice President Mike Pence said President Trump continues to mull moving the U.S. embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem al-Quds, which would overturn decades of foreign policy.

"The president is giving serious consideration to moving the American embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem," Pence said before the annual meeting Sunday of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, the largest pro-Israel group in the country.

President Trump said during a press conference last month with Israeli premier Benjamin Netanyahu that he would "love to see that happen. We're looking at it with great care."

Even though Congress passed a law in 1995 to move the embassy to Jerusalem al-Quds, it has met pushback from former presidents Clinton, Bush and Obama. Those presidents have suspended the move via a waiver due to national security concerns.

Pence sought to highlight the Trump administration's affinity for the state of Israel and its commitments.

Trump "has made it absolutely clear. Our commitment to Israel's defense is non-negotiable. Not now, not ever," he said.
